		Coffee Background

	Kona is the name of district in the State of Hawaii. Kona can be translated” leeward” referring to the dry side of the island in the Hawaiian language, and supposedly meaning the south side of the island where most storms don’t hit. Sources say “Kona” can also be the name of a storm as well. Coffee arrived in Hawaii in the early 1800s. Some sources say the British warship H.M.S. Blonde brought coffee to Hawaii from Brazil in the 1820s. The Hawaiian governor of Oahu , Chief Boki brought coffee from Rio de Janeiro. A missionary by the name of Samuel Ruggles is said to have first planted coffee in the Kona District around 1828. The first historical reference to coffee in Kona was around 1840. Although coffee was planted all over various parts of the island, the best was in the Kona District because of the superb climate and rich volcanic soil.
