The term “vanilla” comes from a Spanish word "vainilla” meaning little pod. Vanilla flavoring comes from from the orchid family, and are perennial vines from the genus Vanilla (the orchid family, V. planifolia native to Mexico). The extract comes from the pods, which are also called vanilla beans. Spanish Conquistadors brought it to Europe in the 1500s but it was not produced in quantity. In the 1800s, a French slave,Edmund Albius found a method of hand cultivation that allowed mass production expanding vanilla spice trade world wide.
